Gerontologist and Founder

Dr. Jacqueline Lehn DuPont is a Gerontologist. Her undergraduate degree is from the University of San Diego with a B.S in Behavior Sciences and a minor in Religious Studies. She did her graduate work at USC in Gerontology (MSG) and an internship at the Geriatric Education Center at the Kreck School of Medicine. She also has an additional Master’s in Public Administration. She did her post-doctoral/doctorate studies on Psychology of Aging at Ashbourne in Oxford (Ph.D.).

Prior to founding the Cottages, Dr. Lehn DuPont was a director of Manor Care Health Care, Arcadia Special Care Unit, and also was the Alzheimer’s Consultant/Director for Country Villa Health Services.

Volunteers and Internships

Irvine Cottages sponsors interns and volunteers all year long. Irvine Cottages has a student internship program in which high school and college students initiate and participate in arts, crafts, games, and celebrations with our residents. Students have been selected from: University of Southern California, Brown University, Chapman University,  Notre Dame University, California State University at Fullerton, JSerra Catholic High School, Orange County School of the Arts and Thomas Aquinas College. In 2012, we had 11 interns!  Please call (949) 533-5938 if you are interested in becoming a volunteer or paid intern with us.

Staff Training

Professional continuing education is provided monthly for our caregiving staff by the Alzheimer’s Association of Orange County, Home Health, and Hospice companies.  The current curriculum schedule covers these topics:

  • Nutrition, Home Food Safety, and Preparation
  • Enhancing Meal Times and Activities
  • Medication Management (Ordering New Medications, Refills, Crushing, Medication Rights)
  • Preventing Urinary Tract Infections (UTI’s) and Infection Control
  • Skin Integrity (Reporting skin changes)
  • End of Life Care (medications, coping with loss, POLST)
  • Residents’ Rights
  • Safe Lifting, Transfers and Reducing Falls
  • Assisting with Activities of Daily Living (ADL’s)
  • Beauty Care
  • Emergency Preparedness

In addition, our own detailed Cottage Training Program includes dementia care classes about:

  • Communicating with the Memory-Impaired Person
  • Do’s and Don’ts of Memory Care
  • Redirection Techniques
  • Stages of Alzheimer’s Disease (Early, Middle and Late)
  • Positive “Therapeutic Fibbing”
  • Validation Therapy
  • Activities – the Key to Keeping Boredom Away
  • Medication Training
  • Redirection Techniques
